Youth basketball camps, academies, and training programs are one of the primary ways that young boys and girls develop their basketball skills, learning lessons in both life and sports. In these camps, kids run drills, participate in scrimmages, and team workouts under the guidance of a coaching staff.
The main challenge camps face today is with engagement. If you’ve taught kids before, you know how hard it is to keep them focused and motivated. Many skills in basketball are difficult, and require lots of effort before you can see any of it pay off. Without a consistently high level of engagement, it is unlikely for kids to improve their basketball play.
This is the challenge that coaches face in youth basketball camps. Traditionally, engagement is done through a carefully crafted curriculum - building a camp schedule that keeps kids active.
But curriculum is only part of the picture. The other puzzle piece to building an engagement is feedback. As a learner, kids need to understand what they are doing wrong, how to improve, and be rewarded for trying something new. To do this well, the feedback needs to be personalized to each student. Unfortunately, this is too much to ask of a commonly small coaching staff.
In the NBA, every move a player does is recorded, documented, and analyzed by the entire team. As a player, reviewing footage and stats is a critical way to track your performance and understand gaps and ways to improve. Most camp sessions are not recorded and given the number of kids per camp, it’s not feasible for staff today to collect data for every kid.
Hooper tracks all the people on a court, and understands the actions taken by each player during drills and games. That means that for each game, we get the shots, rebounds, and assists for every kid on the court. Over time, this enables Hooper users to understand each kid’s progress and measure their improvement over the span of a camp.

Beyond numbers and stat sheets, a lot of what makes a youth basketball program special is motivating kids to play and learn. In our experience, we’ve found that camps that utilize Hooper see their kids more engaged and excited to play basketball knowing that they will be recorded and filmed. And not only are the kids engaged, the parents are now able to particpate in their kids’ journeys, by having access to the day-to-day and week-to-week stats and footage. We think this is really what makes Hooper special.
To highlight one of Hooper’s partner camps, Lay-Up Youth Basketball is a charity that runs a youth program based in Toronto that excels at helping kids building important skills on and off the court. Hooper worked with Lay-Up to record their camp sessions and provide footage, stats, and highlights to the kids and the teaching team.
It’s hard to describe the impact of Hooper on the kids themselves. Rather than use words, we think it’s best to see it in action:
